Christmas and the holidays are approaching, and it is common for people to travel to see family and friends. What happens to your plants when you go on vacation?
You may have asked your neighbors if they could look after your plants at that time, only to discover that they are also leaving. However, by following these helpful hints, you can ensure that your plants are well cared for.
You can take some precautions before going on vacation to help your plants get through this period without the daily care they require. Even if you find some minor damage in the plants when you return, these can be minimized if certain guidelines are followed.
Examine the specific requirements of your plant. Some interior pot plants can survive on their own for up to two weeks if properly prepared.
1. It is critical to keep the plants out of direct sunlight, as they can be easily burned by too much light. However, lack of sunlight is equally dangerous, so place your plants in a room with hazy light that is neither too bright nor too dark. A room facing north is ideal.
2. Keep your plants well watered at all times. There are now automatic watering systems that do not require electricity and provide enough water to your plants while you are away.
3. You can also build a homemade system to water your plants while you are away. Place a large container or bucket of water next to the plant, with one end of a cotton rope in the water and the other end about half an inch into the soil.
Water will moisten the cotton rope and eventually reach the soil. If you experiment with how much water your plants require before you leave, you can ensure that you are using a large enough container to keep them watered for an extended period of time.
4. You can prevent your plants' water from evaporating by placing them in a clear plastic bag with holes. If the room temperature exceeds 25 degrees Celsius, it is recommended that a large container of water be placed in the room to ensure adequate humidity.
5. The plants can also be placed in the bath and covered with a clear plastic sheet with holes. Most importantly, remember to water your plants liberally before leaving!
