Learn the Fundamentals!
Mastering the fundamentals entails being able to play in all keys. Being able to transpose any song to any other key - preferably on the spot.
Did you know that 95% of guitarists fail to master the fundamentals? Yes, they intend to do it, but they almost never do.
Why is this the case? It's because they think it's boring, complicated, and a lot of work. Most importantly, it's no fun! And they were mostly correct. It doesn't have to be that way. Mastering the fundamentals can be a lot of fun if you approach it methodically and step by step.
What does it mean to master the fundamentals?
There are six basic steps you must take:
1. Learn the names of all the notes on each string, one at a time.
2. Learn how to build a C Major scale.
The fundamentals of guitar theory. Simple stuff.
3. Discover how the chords of the major scale are formed and what they are... their names, and so on. Dm Em F G Am Bdim.
Understanding of basic chord construction.
4. Practice the C major scale triad patterns all over the fret board.
Triads are three-note chords. Learning and playing is simple and enjoyable.
5. Practice playing triads with common chord progressions.
Learn to play the triads and apply them to the most common chord progressions that can be found in thousands of songs.
6. Practice step 5 in all keys.
Once you've mastered steps one through five in the key of C, it's a breeze to learn the other 11 major keys.
Hint: It's a lot simpler than you think. All of the patterns are identical to those learned for C major. You are not required to learn any new patterns. This is cookie cutter stuff.
It is not at all difficult. All you need is a step-by-step method that makes sense and is simple and enjoyable to use.
